The role

We are looking for a talented Head of Development to lead our technical team and deal with an expanding workload as Aqueduct continues to acquire clients. We’ve recently launched the sites for Tottenham Hotspur, and Suzuki, and there is no letting up: late this year we will also launch a brand-new site for We expect the proportion of actual project work for the role to be around 60% with most projects using either Umbraco and Sitecore.

The technical work is varied and spans across CMS development, API development and integration, live data consumption and processing (for sports and automotive clients), dev-ops (mainly Azure and some AWS), internal tools and set-up: continuous integration, automated testing, TDD.

We are looking for someone who can lead and manage a technical team, offer advice, leadership, mentoring and support, recruit permanent and freelance developers when necessary. The role requires a good knowledge and practice of Scrum, Kanban and test-driven methodologies.

As well as development and technical duties the Head of Development will be key in client relationships for pitch support, problem resolution and platform support. Our clients enjoy working with our development team and the role requires someone who is comfortable with clients and can translate complex technical matters in plain English.

This role will report directly to the CEO.



We expect the successful applicant to be capable of:


  • Proficient developer in all .NET matters
  • Experienced and certified in .NET CMS, particularly Umbraco and Sitecore.
  • Active on self development and in the .NET/CMS community
  • Set code standards and patterns for the dev team
  • Great knowledge and practice of TDD
  • Great knowledge and practice of continuous integration tools (TeamCity, Octopus deploy)
  • Great knowledge and practice of setting up and managing cloud based hosting environments: Azure and AWS
  • Great knowledge and practice of agile methodologies (Scrum, Kanban)


  • Line management of development team
  • Lead team personal development strategy and principles
  • Lead technology choices and coding practices
  • Advice CEO on team composition (Front End, Back end, QA)
  • Advice on IT matters (computer set-ups, tools and network configuration)
  • Able to represent Aqueduct in key meetings with clients and tech partners/third parties
  • Create long term relationships with tech partners
  • Advice CEO and Project Director on resourcing strategy for tech projects (permanent and freelance)
  • Help with tech input for pitches and participate in pitch presentation to clients if relevant
  • Become to go to person for advice on all development matters

We also work with and around our clients, often literally as they come in to the office to work with us on several of their projects. You should be comfortable liaising and exchanging ideas with these people and have had experience in this type of environment.


Experience and skills

We are looking for the successful applicant to demonstrate:

  • You will be a passionate full stack technologist, backend trained in .NET, with experience building and maintaining web applications and apps in C# using an MVC framework.
  • You will have worked in an Agile, team environment, with experience in writing code in a TDD fashion and performing and receiving code reviews.
  • You will lead from the front and inspire your team to deliver sound, future proof solutions whilst looking at new trends and technologies.
  • You will help lead and define the tools and technologies we use which includes our development tools and environment, hosting strategy and
  • You will work closely with our Project Director to scope, plan and deliver complex technical solutions.
  • You will help the CEO formulate our technical roadmap and recruitment needs for the future.
  • You will have previously held a leadership role in a commercial environment, building complex and high traffic web applications as a head of a team or leading a team of technologist.
  • Demonstrable experience in organising, conducting and analysing user testing programmes and customer facing surveys.
  • A strong presenter and communicator who is comfortable leading from the front with clients and internal teams.
